چکیده
Application of psycholinguistic insights initiated a long career researching how children learn to read words. A theory was proposed claiming that spellings individual words are stored in memory when their graphemes become bonded phonemes pronunciations along with meanings, and this enables readers automatically “by sight”. Our studies offered support for theory. In addition, they clarified move into reading. Results showed teaching beginners decode using grapheme-phoneme subunits facilitates word reading spelling much better than whole syllabic units or by analogy. Findings storing new improves vocabulary learning many types learners. This research underscores the importance systematic phonics instruction establish foundational knowledge – phonemic segmentation, relations, decoding skill setting on path becoming skilled readers.

متن کاملDo Preschool Children Learn to Read Words from Environmental Prints?
Parents and teachers worldwide believe that a visual environment rich with print can contribute to young children's literacy. Children seem to recognize words in familiar logos at an early age. However, most of previous studies were carried out with alphabetic scripts. Alphabetic letters regularly correspond to phonological segments in a word and provide strong cues about the identity of the wh...
متن کاملTask demands and knowledge influence how children learn to read words
To examine how young children learn to read new words, we asked preschoolers (N = 115, mean age 4 years, 8 months) to learn and remember novel spellings that made sense based on letter names (e.g. TZ for tease) and spellings that were visually distinctive but phonetically inappropriate. Children who were more knowledgeable about letter names tended to perform better in the name condition than t...
متن کاملHow do Profoundly Deaf Children Learn to Read?
Reading requires two related, but separable, capabilities: (1) familiarity with a language, and (2) understanding the mapping between that language and the printed word (Chamberlain & Mayberry, 2000; Hoover & Gough, 1990). Children who are profoundly deaf are disadvantaged on both counts. Not surprisingly, then, reading is difficult for profoundly deaf children. But some deaf children do manage...
متن کاملHow Babies Learn to Find Words
A recent study by Sa ran and colleagues (1996) has demonstrated that young infants have a striking ability to rapidly learn the statistical relationships present in sequences of syllables. Eight-month-olds were able to distinguish three-syllable \words" that they had heard previously in a stream of syllables from those that they had not. Since the only evidence available in the input stream is ...
